Gracie was too smart for her own good. She was very clever, and found many ways to entertain herself including how to manipulate objects to her liking.
I went to work one day on my day off specifically to take pictures of the animals I work with. I watched from the second floor as the trainers gave Gracie a storage bin with some of her food in it to play with in the water.
After the food was gone, she spun the bin around, investigating. Then she sat up high in the water, looked around, pulled the bin over to the deck area, and pushed it up onto the deck.
Again, she scoped the area to see if anyone was watching, then climbed up on the bin, stood at full height, and reached up for the hanging vines spilling over the top of the exhibit. She pulled them down, and then curled up on top of the bin chewing on her unofficial greens. Another great example of the intelligience of sea otters and their use of tools.
